  1. Saddle-wire Stitching
    1. The simplest method of binding
      1. by stapling the pages through the fold
        1. Brochures, weekly magazines and comics

                2. Disadvantages

                  2. Side-wire Stitching
                    1. staples are passed through the side of the document close to the spine
                      1. Many modern photocopiers can collate and staple documents
                        1. Information booklets, revision materials
                          1. Advantages
                            1. Used when document is too thick for saddle-wire stitching
                              1. Relatively inexpensive when produced commercially
                                1. Ideal for binding multiples of single sheets of paper without folds
                                2. Disadvantages
                                  1. Lower-quality visual appearance
                                    1. Cannot lay printed materials flat to read as it causes damage to spine
                                  2. Spiral and Comb binding
                                    1. Pages are punched through with a series of holes along the spine. A spiralling steel or plastic band is inserted through the holes to hold the sheets together

                                                        1. Better presentation an visual appeal with printable spine rather than staples
                                                          1. Better quality - puts all the pages or signatures together, roughens and flattens the edge, then a flexible adhesive attaches the paper cover to the spine
                                                            1. Glued spine provides longevity for a monthly magazine
                                                            2. Disadvantages
                                                              1. Expensive commercial process
                                                            3. Hand-bound or Case-bound
                                                              1. Usually combines sewing and glueing to create the most durable method of commercial binding
                                                                1. Hardback books, quality presentations (school yearbooks)
                                                                  1. Advantages
                                                                    1. Stiff board is used on the cover to protect the pages
                                                                      1. High quality, professional binding method
                                                                        1. Extremely durable
                                                                        2. Disadvantages
