Literature in the Malaysian Primary ESL Classroom
1. Objectives
  1. 1. to instill and inculcate the reading habit among pupils.
  2. 2. to enrich pupils' vocabulary and language content.
  3. 3. to enhance pupils' thinking skills.
  4. 4. to promote cultural understanding in the Malaysian context.

2. Why?
  1. Music is highly memorable and motivating.
  2. Songs, rhymes and chants are ideal tools to be used in the language classroom.
  3. To introduce, reinforce and recycle structures and vocabulary.
  4. To develop all skills in an integrated way.
  5. To help improve all aspects of pronunciation: stress, rhythm and intonation of the target language.
  6. To present new language in a new rich and imaginative context.
  7. To encourage physical involvement.
  8. To contribute to the learning of the cultural component of the language.
  9. To contribute to the development of a positive attitude towards the language learning.
  10. To help to develop a positive relation between teachers and students.
  11. They promote the practice of pronunciation, intonation and stress.
  12. They are a nice way to introduce, practice and review vocabulary.
  13. They are useful to practice writing.
  14. They enrich the knowledge of cultural features.
  15. They are a way of developing of language skills.

Purposes of Using Songs and Poetry

    1. The growth within yourself that is having an understanding of yourself, of knowing who you are and what you can do.
    2. Inspire the students to develop and believe in their abilities.
  2. Interpersonal
    1. Students must learn to work with others by building a positive social relationship and learning how to work as a team.
    2. Students learn how to communicate, socialize and negotiate with friends, respect as well as to help each other.
2. Linguistic Development
  1. improve listening and sound discrimination skills
  2. improve grammar and accents.
  3. as a classroom activity use for learning structures.
  4. promote listening and speaking exercises practices through different tasks.
  5. fun and interesting way to learn the language structure and grammar.

3. Aesthetic Development
  1. The study of the emotions and the mind in relation to their sense of beauty in literature and other fine arts.
  2. Activities: pottery, crafts, embroidery, painting, origami, soft-toys & puppet making

  1. Cultural biasness
  2. Sensitivity to the impact of culturally-induced behavior
  3. Familiarity to learners' background knowledge
  4. The use of words or expressions which are perceived as inappropriate, offensive or vulgar in the context of the students.
