Resource summary
C1: Slope
Slope of a line
Slope= rise/run
the slope of a line segment on a coordinate grid is the measure of its rate of change: rate of change= change in y/change in x
count the units to determine the rise and run of a slope
Vocab
rise
the vertical distance between 2 points
run
the horizontal distance between 2 points
rate of change
the change in one quantity with respect to the change in another quantity
slope
a measure of how one quantity changes with respect to the other it can be determined by calculating rise/run
negative reciprocals
two numbers whose product equals -1
types of lines and their value
lines sloping down to the left
have a negative slope
lines sloping up to the right
has a positive slope
horizontal lines
slope=0
vertical lines
slope is undefined
parallel lines
parallel lines have an equal slope to each other
perpendicular lines
if you multiply the slopes of two perpendicular lines it will equal -1 because they are negative reciprocals of each other
using slope to id a polygon
*to check whether a polygon is a rectangle determine whether two of the intersecting sides are perpendicular (slopes should be negative reciprocals)
equations used to find slope
y=mx+b
rise/run
rate of change= change in y/change in x
y2-y1/x2-x1
