Has secondary sector jobs such as
computers and electronics, tertiary

and films and it also has quaternary
sector jobs such as car design.
Part of the global core and a major
commercial city.
Prominence in international trade - USA's largest sea
port
The factors in the city's
growth:
The arrival of the railway in 1876 stimulated
the growth with half a million people arriving
within 40 years
The discovery of oil - the opening of manufacturing
industries continued the growth
The aircraft industry took
advantage of the good weather for
civil military test flights
The development of the film industry in Hollywood
in the 1920's and 30's.
Problems due to the growth:
Housing shortages - caused by high
rates of migration
Work - a changing economy
(deindustrialisation) has caused a loss of
thousands of manufacturing jobs
Waste - 24 million people
produce 50,000 tonnes of waste
everyday
Health and eduction - many
migrants are excluded as
they can not afford to pay.
Where has the main growth
occurred?
Suburban areas - on the outskirts,
particularly the Eastern edge because
people were wanting to escape the city
centre congestions, high rents and
pollution etc. This was made easier by lots
of space and few planning restrictions.
This has mean there are very congested freeways, a loss
of famland and heavy pollution. It has also caused a
decline in the city centre leading to it being known as the
'donut city'. It has also caused patchwork development
which has led to segregated ethnic enclaves.
The LA PLAN's (Progressive Los Angeles
Network)
Proposes an agenda for
sustainable living, the emphasis is
on transport, environment and
food. It means giving residents
more control over the future of their
city.
Environmental sustainability -
clean fuel vehicles and green
energy
Economic sustainability - banning big chain
store developments to allow local
businesses to survive.
Social sustainability - requiring
developers to build affordable housing.
