    1. DANGEROUS WORKING CONDITIONS
      1. Machinery had no protective measures
        1. Workers had no protective clothing
          1. The noise could cause deafness & heavy work caused deformities
          2. POOR SANITATION
            1. No proper toilet facilities
              1. The smell & overuse caused disease & illness
              2. WAGES
                1. Cheaper to employ women & children
                  1. Paid tokens rather than wages to buy goods they had made
                    1. Paid some of their wages against factory owned accommodation
                      1. Factory rules meant fine so less wages to pay
                    2. PAUPER APPRENTICES
                      1. Given food, clothes & bed instead of wages
                        1. Often worked day/night shifts
                          1. early start, long days average 12 hours
                            1. Worked before breakfast & only 2 short breaks for meals
                              1. Mainly orphans as the factories agreed to house & train them
                                1. Hard, physical labour
                                2. CHILDREN
                                  1. Employed as extra income for family
                                    1. Didn't go to school so kept them off the streets
                                      1. Cheap labour & easy to control
                                        1. Bullied & beaten by overseer so produced more & then he got paid better
                                        2. NOT WILLING TO CHANGE
                                          1. Finance - cost to much to improve working conditions
                                            1. Have to consider the workers, especially children
                                              1. Possibly pay more
                                                1. May have to stop children working nights and/ 12 hour shifts
