Takes the reader into confidence
Sharing his memory of significant events
Coming to terms with whats happened & gaining more understanding himself
Beggins with self anslysis
"Reserving all judgements is a matter of infinate hope"
Highlights him as a participant with own characteristics
Not neutral narration = info he oresents us with is coloured by his character

Some of which are scornful
But some admerational
"Heightened sensativity to the promises of life
"Extrodinary gift for hope"
CHARACTER
Nick Carraway
He had moved east for material sucess
Irony: in going to the east "he was a guide, a pathfinder an original settler"
He also feels unsettled from the war & possibly a relationship breakup
He chooses not to expose these as he is not an emotional character
Returned to the midwest to reflect on past few years
Caraway is a tall yellow plant with thin leaves
The Buchanans
Live in persuit of pleasure
Casual aimless way of life
Strongly contrast with GAtsby who is self-disaplined
Characterised as wealthy drifters
Daisy
Name symbolises a delicate white flower, irony is used as her lifestyle is completly manufactured & remote from the natural world
Opens up "in a flower-like way"- artificiality makes the similie unconvincing
Clearly American upper-classes who have privildges in wealth
Tom
Rasist coments show USA's reality of clear social division
Thinks he us superior to others

Complex grammatical sentances & obscure vocab

Nick & Gatsby both living in suburb of West Egg, NY
Less fashionalble than East Egg
"Egg" suggests new life- irony as it bring the oppersite to them both
