      1. How are they changing?
        1. In 2007 UN said for the first time 50% of world population lived in cities
          1. Around 180,000 more people are added to cities each day
            1. 1st cause is urbanisation
              1. People move from country to city
              2. 2nd cause is natural increase
                1. People naturally have children
          2. What is the global pattern?
            1. ACs
              1. Most ACs have already had most exaggerated urban growth
                1. Happened between Industrial revolution and 1950s
                2. During this period lot of new houses built so people moved in
                  1. People wanted to move because cities promised more money
                    1. Baby boom was also a major factor
                    2. ACs used to have largest population now they don't
                    3. LIDCs and EDCs
                      1. Their most exaggerated urban growth is yet to happen or is happening
                        1. Mainly due to urbanisation
                        2. Mostly young people who move to cities
                          1. Young people have children and this also contributes
                            1. Want a better life for themselves and their family
                      2. World cities and megacities
                        1. Megacities
                          1. What are they?
                            1. Cities or urban area with a population of over 10 million
                              1. Used to be 2 in 1950 now there are over 30
                              2. Why are they important?
                                1. Provides people with home and jobs
                                  1. Most people who move in are young looking for money
                                  2. Densely packed stopping urban sprawl
                                    1. More services and better quality of life
                                  3. World city
                                    1. What are they?
                                      1. A city which is considered to be an important hub in the economic world
                                        1. More opinion based than number based like megacity
                                      2. Characteristicts
                                        1. Headquarters for many multinational companies
                                          1. A centre of soft power
                                            1. e.g. owns major news company
                                            2. Primary city i.e. most important city in region/country
                                              1. Highly rated educational facilities e.g. universities
                                                1. Cultural opportunities e.g. theatre and music
                                          2. Reasons and consequences of urbanisation
                                            1. Rapid urbanisation
                                              1. Reasons
                                                1. More opportunities for employment in cities
                                                  1. Better services e.g. healthcare and school
                                                    1. Stories that you can do well in the city
                                                    2. Consequences
                                                      1. nable to cope with large number of people
                                                        1. Massive strain on services
                                                          1. Not enough houses
                                                            1. Increased spending
                                                              1. Money may not be able in LIDCs
                                                              2. Strain on infrastructure
                                                            2. Suburbanisation
                                                              1. Reasons
                                                                1. You may want to live close to city but not in it
                                                                  1. Suburbs are urban areas that offer everything in the city without being in it
                                                                    1. Less pollution, cheaper house prices
                                                                2. Consequences
                                                                  1. House prices go up
                                                                    1. Getting to the city may take a long time due to traffic or distance
                                                                  2. Counter-urbanisation
                                                                    1. Reasons
                                                                      1. People may want to escape stress
                                                                        1. Perceived to be a better and safer pace to raise children
                                                                          1. Less noise and air pollution
                                                                            1. Cheaper living
                                                                            2. Consequences
                                                                              1. Creation of dormitory towns
                                                                                1. People only there to sleep
                                                                                2. Increase in house prices
