Designer Babies & Saviour Siblings
babies with gender and characteristics chosen by their parents - currently illegal
a child conceived by IVF with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to save the life of incurably ill sibling through the use of the cord blood
Arguments AGAINST DESIGNER BABIES
involves choosing the embryos with the 'right features' and destroying those which don't
the test itself could damage the foetus which means harming another human being
shows unhealthy search for the 'perfect child'
new life should be accepted and loved in all forms
could lead to better human beings with only the rich able to afford them
Children are a gift from God and should be loved in all forms
Arguments FOR DESIGNER BABIES
morally acceptable as it ensures the health of a baby
stops hereditary condition being based down so the kind thing to do
relieves the suffering of parents who will have to see a child die before another
allows children to fulfill their potential
parents get to watch children grow up
Arguments AGAINST SS
embryos are discarded in the process - Christians who believe in the sanctity of life will oppose
we do not value the child for what it is but what it can do
all children should be valued for being children of God
the saviour siblings could be emotionally damaged when they find out they were born to save another sibling
child may feel unwanted
Arguments FOR SS
morally good
Jesus healed the sick
ss are just like other kinds of blood or organ donation
an ss can be treated as a normal human being
example could be pregnant mums who exist for babies
