Spelling Rules for Adding ed
- 1. A verb ends in -e, simply add the letter d.
- love - loved
- like - liked
- smile - smiled
- love - loved
- 2. A verb ends in a consonant followed by y, change the y to i and add -ed.
- marry - married
- study - studied
- cry - cried
- marry - married
- 3. A verb ends in a vowel followed by y, simply add -ed with no changes.
- play - played
- stay - stayed
- enjoy - enjoyed

- 4. A One-syllable word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (except x), double the last letter and add -ed. (Note: Never double final x.)
- stop - stopped
- jog - jogged
- plan - planned

- 5. A word (including words end in x), simply add -ed with no changes.
