  1. 1. A verb ends in -e, simply add the letter d.
    1. love - loved

        1. smile - smiled
        2. 2. A verb ends in a consonant followed by y, change the y to i and add -ed.
          1. marry - married
            1. study - studied
              1. cry - cried
              2. 3. A verb ends in a vowel followed by y, simply add -ed with no changes.
                1. play - played
                  1. stay - stayed
                    1. enjoy - enjoyed
                    2. 4. A One-syllable word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (except x), double the last letter and add -ed. (Note: Never double final x.)
                      1. stop - stopped
                        1. jog - jogged
                          1. plan - planned
                          2. 5. A word (including words end in x), simply add -ed with no changes.
                            1. wish - wished
                              1. visit - visited
                                1. open - opened
                                2. 6. Irregular verbs.
