2 psychological explanations
of schizophrenia (AO2)
Face validity
cognitive models such as Frith and
Hemsley's have provided a way of explaining
many if the symptoms of schizophrenia
has good face validity
however they explain the positive symptoms quite well
they fail to explain the negative symptoms
Link to biological explanations
strength of model is the link to biological
explanations as there is good evidence to suggest
schizophrenia does have an organic cause
Frith produced evidence to show that there
was reduced cerebral blood flow
pathway between the pre-frontal cortex and
the hippocampus during certain cognitive
tasks supporting this idea
Berger evidence for DBT
found that schizophrenics reported a higher level of double bind
statements from their mothers than non-schizophrenics
however not reliable as you are relying on patient's memories and
their memory could be effected by their illness
other research has not supported Berger's
findings making them unreliable
Expressed emotion support
has been universal support for the EE theory
it is unclear whether the EE is a cause of schizophrenia or whether
it is a result of having a psychotic person in your family
however one significant outcome is that it
has led to effective therapies that have
reduced the relapse rates in schizophrenia
Reductionist and its advantages
psychological explanations of schizophrenia can
be see as reductionist as they clearly cannot
explain all forms of schizophrenia
does not take into account good evidence that
schizophrenics may have an biological cause
could be argued that by focusing on the elements of
disordered thinking of family relationships psychological
explanations have led to the use of effective therapies
combined with drug therapy they have enabled
patients to manage their symptoms more
successfully and increase the quality of their life
Diathesis stress model
findings of concordance rates being between 38-61% for MZ twins suggest a genetic vulnerability
but genetic theory cannot explain all schizophrenia
better explanation if the disorder would be to take a
multi-disciplinary approach such as the diathesis stress model
suggests you may inherit a genetic predisposition to develop the illness
but will not go on to develop the disorder unless stressors in your environment act as a trigger
amongst other things this would explain why middle class people
living in a supportive family with a pleasant enjoyable job are less
likely than those who do not to be diagnosed with schizophrenia
