Science Grade 10-Ecology  Key Terms to study: Definitions Biotic:  any living factors that influence on organism within an ecosystem ex.animals Abiotic: non-living that shape an ecosystem ex.temperature Community: population  that live and the same time and location Photosynthesis: the process by which a plant uses the energy from the sun to produce its own energy Ecosystem: includes the communities and the abiotic factors Biodiversity: number of genetically different types of organisms in an environment Ecological Niche: the role of an organism in its environment, where it is in the food web and how it manages to survive Food web: more complex feeding relationships than in a food chain Primary Consumer: animals that eat primary producers Secondary Consumer: eat primary consumers Tertiary consumer: eat secondary consumer bioamplification: an increase in the concentration of a substance as you move up on the food chain Bioaccumulation: a process where an organism consumes a substance at a rate higher than they can break it down Cellular Respiration: the chemical process that genet=rates most of the energy in the cell Nitrogen cycle: continuous process by which nitrogen changes into various forms Carbon cycle: the combined process including photosynthesis, decomposition, and respiration Closed Population: Only natality and mortality affect population size. Open Population: Come and go, all factors are acting on the population of each organism Consumer: feeds on other organisms in a food chain Decomposer: breaks down dead or decaying organisms Producers: make their own food Endangered: a species that is close to extinction Extinct: a species that is not found anywhere Extirpated: any species that no longer exists in one part of Canada Herbivore: only eats plants Omnivore: eats both plants and animals Carnivore: eats only animals Denitrification: the loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compound Nitrogen Fixation: when bacteria living in soil or on the roots of legumes convert N2 gas into ammonia Immigration: movement of individuals into  an area; causes growth Emigration: movement of individual out of an area; causes decrease Combustion: a chemical change Carrying Capacity: number of organisms the environment can support
