BACKGROUNDThe background to the long term causes of World War One can be traced back to the end of the C19th. Alliances, broken alliances and German naval expansion all caused much friction in Europe with two camps developing - both of which distrusted the other. The immediate spark of World War One may well have been the murder at Sarajevo but suspicion and mistrust had been growing since 1882.

PROGRESS The strategy of the Central Powers suffered from miscommunication. Germany had promised to support Austria-Hungary's invasion of Serbia, but interpretations of what this meant differed… Confusion among the Central Powers Serbian campaign German forces in Belgium and France ...

AFTERMATH No other war had changed the map of Europe so dramatically. Four empires disappeared: the German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian... Formal end of the war: Germany on 10 January 1920 Austria on 16 July 1920 Bulgaria on 9 August 1920 Hungary on 26 July 1921 Turkey on 6 August 1924
