Breaking the sound barrier

When an object travels at the speed of sound in that medium, - v = vs - it is said to be travelling at mach 1

When this happens, the observer doesn't hear anything until the source arrives

The sound waves in the direction of which the object is moving are very bunched up

Supersonic

An object is moving at supersonic speed when it is moving faster than the speed of sound in that medium

You don't hear anything until the object has passed!
