Information runs through 3 systems, The sensory memory, the short term memory and the long term memory under the control of rehearsal and coding

Information is received from the environment through our senses and is automatically stored briefly in our sensory memory

Rehearsal and Coding determine the fate of this information. Rehearsal is an iportant process because not only does it keep imformation in the short term store but it also transfers information from the STM to the LTM

The stores are distinguished by their capacity, their duration and their encoding

The STM has a capacity of 7+/-2 items of information, a duration of 15-30 seconds and its encoding is primarily acoustic

The LTM has a capacity of an infinite amount of items, a duration of a lifetime and its encoding is primarily semantic

Information can then be used as an output
