COMMON SWITCHING TECHNIQUES

1. Circuit Switching

2. Packet Switching

3. Messase Switching

Circuit Switching: When two nodes communciate with each other over a dedicated communication path,it is called circuit switching

-An important property of circuit switching is the needs to setup an end-to-end path before any data can be sent which can either be permanat or temprory

- Application which uses circuit may have to go through three phases-

1.ESTABLISH A CIRCUIT

2.TRANSFER OF DATA

3.DISCONNECT THE CIRCUIT

Packet Switching: The entire messase are broken down into smaller transmssion units called packets. The switching information is added in the haeder of each packet and transmit independently.

-In packet switching network, first packet of a multi-packet messase may be forwarded before the second one has fully arrived , thus reducing delay and improving throughout.

- Since there is no fixed path, differnt packet can follow diffrent path and thus they may reach to destination out of order.

Messase Switching: In Messase switching , No physical path is establish between sender and reciever in advance . The whole messase is treated as data unit and transfer in its entirity which contain th entire data being deleivered from source to destination node.

- A switch works on messase switching first recieves the whole messase and buffers it until there are resources available to transfer it to the next hop.

- If next hop is not having enough resouces to accomodate large size messase , the messase is stored and switch waits.

- E-MAIL and VOICE MAIL are examples of messase switching system
