Japanese 101 - CHS

***NEW MEMBERS/STUDENTS PLEASE CLICK HERE*** First module, meant to introduce in-person students to how I plan to work this out.

Hello there! Welcome to my Japanese 101 crash course. This site is where I'll be putting resources every week to help you get started with your Japanese studies. Our first meeting will be this Friday (9/3) in Room 409, where I will introduce myself and where I want to go with this course, and answer any questions you may have about the club.   Basically, as you might have figured out already, this is an intro class in Japanese aimed at beginners, although those with experience and even native speakers are more than welcome to come too. Most of the club-related stuff will be online, with the bulk of meetings to introduce new resources that'll be found here. This explanation might be confusing at first, so hopefully it makes a bit more sense as time goes on.  I'm trying out my own approach at teaching, so instead of teaching for test performance, I'm basically letting you learn what you want to learn from what I give you, and the ultimate goal of this course is for you to find a way to continue your studies on your own and build your own path with the help of native speakers, instead of learning only what your teacher says you have to learn. I'm new as a teacher, so I'm figuring it out as I go, so please bear with me. :) This entire thing is a work in progress. Group to practice: https://www.goconqr.com/en-US/groups/114611   Please remember to join the Remind (@jpn101chs to 81010) and/or this group as soon as possible so we have a way to stay in contact off-campus. And let me know of any questions you have through the Remind or the group!   Hope to see you on Friday!   Link to 9/3 PowerPoint: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1WkwRoHrNhlcMX9jPhdLQCR11V8lxVfWeJ82qNLnFUY4/edit?usp=sharing (If you're outside the school, I still need to make a copy for outside of my school account.) Don't worry about the "grades/results", I'm not using those.

Start learning hiragana so we can start to work on reading and typing

https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/ This article does a really good job of introducing hiragana, in my opinion, and I strongly suggest you go through it. Since I started without help, I personally took several months to become confident with hiragana, and I'm not excepting you to be instantly good, especially without much practice early on. The more you practice using it, whether it be reading or writing, the more you'll get the hang of it.

I'll use the first few lessons of Duolingo to get you started

Video that my first Kahoot will be based on

I'm holding a Kahoot on October 1st, and a good chunk of it will be recognizing beginner phrases from here, so I strongly suggest you watch this a couple times and see how many you can memorize.     I also strongly recommend watching these videos, to help to start to make sense of Japanese, although I won't really test you on this next week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycVlxOzZbaY (Primer on pronunciation, grammar and writing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFq2Y43DY0U (Explaining writing system, hiragana/katakana/kanji) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePu05w5aIBE (How the grammar works exactly)
