Flashcards
Unit 5.4
Flashcards do conjunto (21)
- 1What is the speed of light?300 Million m/s.
- 2How does light travel? In the form of radiation as light does not need a present material so it may be transmitted unlike sound.
- 3What is the energy from the sun called?Electromagnetic radiation.
- 4What are other forms of radiation that is released from the sun?Visible light, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, microwaves and radio waves.
- 5What is the name given to all the different types of radiation released from the sun?The electromagnetic spectrum.
- 6What makes the forms of radiation from the sun different? The length and frequency of each type of wave.
- 7Give an example of this. One radio wave is much longer than a gamma wave, but the frequency accounts for very little unlike a gamma waves.
- 8Explain about visible light and the sun's electromagnetic spectrum.Visible light is on the larger side of the sun's electromagnetic spectrum but it is made up of a spectrum itself which are the colours of the rainbow.
- 9How does a rainbow become visible to us?Rain drops split the white light released from the sun into the visible spectrum of colours which we call a rainbow.
- 10What is this process called? This process of splitting white light through transparent and translucent objects is called dispersion.
- 11What are the colours of the visible spectrum in order?Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
- 12How can this be remembered?Through the acronym ROY G BIV.
- 13How does the visible spectrum relate to the sun's electromagnetic spectrum? The wavelength and frequency change with each colour, for example red has the longest wave lengths but lowest frequency.
- 14What are three ways that light can interact with substances?Transmitted through the substance, reflected from the surface or absorbed into the substance.
- 15What is a transparent substance?A substance in which almost all light can be transmitted through.
- 16What are two examples of this?Clear glass and shallow water.
- 17What is a translucent substance?A substance that transmits only some light which is scattered after that.
- 18What are two examples of this?Tissue paper and fingernails.
- 19What is an opaque substance?A substance in which no light can be transmitted through.
- 20What are two examples of this?Brick and wood.
- 21What is a reflection? When light bounces off surfaces such as glass or mirrors.
