  1. 1In research what are tests being used for?Testing theories, hypothesis, studying development and change, predicting behavior
  2. 2In practice what are tests being used for?diagnosis and psychological and educational decision-making
  3. 3What was the first modern test?intelligence test by Binet and Simon 1905
  4. 4What are the three rootes of modern testing?1. civil service examinations
    2. the assessment of academic achievement
    3. the study of individual differences in behavior
  5. 5What is the definition of an educational or psychological test? It's a measurement instrument of a person's maximum or typical performance under standardized conditions, where the performance is assumed to reflect one or more latent attributes
  6. 6What is a maximum performance test? One or more problems are asked to be solved, answers can very in correctness
    --> achievement or intelligence tests
  7. 7What is a typical performance test? One or more tasks are asked to respond to, cannot be evaluated on correctness
--> personality and attitude tests with questionnaires or inventories
  8. 8What are latent attributes?Latent attributes cannot be observed,
one or more latent attributes underlie the test performance
  9. 9What are surveys?contain questions that are answered by the respondant, not assumed that questions reflect on latent attributes
  10. 10What is a subtest? An idependent part of the test that consist of one or more items
  11. 11What is an item? The smallest possible subtest of a test, a test consists of n-items
  12. 12What is dimensionality? It is equal to the number of latent attributes (variables)
1 latent attribute = unidimensional test
    2 = two- dimensional test
    > 1 = multi-dimensional test
  13. 13What is a mental test?consists of cognitive task (problems and questions)
  14. 14What is a physical test?consists of instruments to make somatic or physiological measurements (galvanic skin response, heart rate, brain activities)
  15. 15What is a power test?accuracy, answering very difficult items as good as possible
there are also time-limited power tests
  16. 16What is a speed test?measures speed taken to solve problems (usually easy items that all test takers can solve)
  17. 17What is an ability/aptitude test?an area that is not studied for by the test taker, wide range of abilities can be measured (also intelligence) to predict future competences
  18. 18What is an achievement test?knowledge that has been taught is tested for --> exam
  19. 19What is a self-report questionnaire?the test taker an the person who is measured are the same
  20. 20What is an observation test?test taker and the person whose performance is measured, are not the same
  21. 21Developing maximum performance tests What is the construct of interest?the latent variable (general) or construct (substantive interpretation) that has to be measured has to be thought of
  22. 22What does an achievement construct measure? The result from instruction and teaching
  23. 23What constructs measure ability and aptitude tests? The result independent of instruction and teaching, e.g. to predict future competences
  24. 24measurement mode: What is the self-performance mode?Test taker is asked to perform a physical or mental task
  25. 25What is the difference between self-evaluation en other-evaluation mode?To be asked to evaluate one's one ability or others that are asked to evaluate someone else's ability to perform a task
  26. 26What are some distinction of the objectives of a test?-can be scientific of practical purposes
    -at individual or group level
-description: how is the person like?
    diagnosis: a conclusion
decision making: What can be done to help?
  27. 27What is the target population? It needs to be defined who is taking the test, for that inclusion and exclusion criteria are used
population can be split in sub-population like female, male
  28. 28What is the conceptual framework?being more specific and precise: Length or difficulty - what is the subject matter that needs to be tested or the cognitive domain? (example)
  29. 29What are the two main distinctions for the item response mode?-free- or constructed response e.g. short-answer or essay items
-choice or selected response e.g. multiple choice items
  30. 30What does a multiple-choice item consists of?Of a stem (question or partial sentence) with one correct answer and more options being one or more distractors
the choice of a distractor indicates which deficiency the test taker has
popular for achievement and ability testing
  31. 31What are item response scales?used for the analysis of item response data
-dichotomous, has two ordered categories, either correct or incorrect
-ordinal polytomous has more than 2 categories
  32. 32The administration mode What is oral administration?A single administrator presents the test to a single test taker (people having difficulty reading, e.g. children, visually handicapped, non-native speakers)
  33. 33What is the Paper-Pencil (P and P) administration?Presented in a form of booklet, test taker reads the instruction and answers, either free responses or choices
test can be administered to groups or single test takers, the test and the order of the items is for everyone the same
  34. 34What is computerized test administration (CT)?Same like P and P only with computer
  35. 35What is computerized adaptive test administration (CAT)?Most advanced computer program provides items that fit best to the test taker (difficult or easy)
