Flashcards
Cognitive Psychology: Memory
Flashcards do conjunto (28)
- 1What is memory?Storage of retreavable information, outcome of learning
- 2What are the memory processes?Encoding (processing of new information), Storage (Recording the information), Retrieval (Accessing stored information)
- 3What are the 2 sub-parts of Encoding?Acquisition (sustaining sensory stimuli to enter memory) and Consolidation (stabilizing memory over time -> long term memory)
- 4What is the sensory memory? (and give an example)The memory of our senses. Example: child's ability to write letters on the wall with a laser pointer
- 5Where is sensual memory stored visually? In the iconic store
- 6Where is sensual memory stored for an auditory use?In the echoic store
- 7How fast does sensory memory decay?Within 0.5 seconds
- 8Can information stored in the sensory memory be erased?Yes
- 9What is the capacity of short term memory?Limited
- 10How long is information stored in short term memory held for?Longer than sensory memory (30 seconds)
- 11What can we compare short term memory to in terms of computers?RAM
- 12How much capacity does long term memory have?Unlimited capacity
- 13For how long can long term memory hold information?Permanently, if needed
- 14What are the 2 types of Long Term memory?Declarative and Procedural
- 15What are the differences between these 2 types?Declarative is for things you can describe, Procedural is for things you can do
- 16What is the difference between Episodic and Semantic memory?Episodic is for events in your life, Semantic is for facts you know
- 17What are the techniques for the transition from STM to LTM?Rehearsal; Distributed > Massed, Mnemonics (add meaning to lists)
- 18What are the 2 types of forgetting that can occur?Interference (new information replacing old) and Decay (information lost over time)
- 19What are the 2 types of interference? (names and meanings)Retroactive (new info interferes with old), Proactive (old info interferes with new)
- 20What is Encoding Specificity? The environment in which you learn is important to remembering the information learned at the given environment
- 21What is constructive memory?Prior experience having an influence on memory
- 22Which part of the brain is essential for memory consolidation?Hippocampus
- 23What is the standard consolidation theory (squire)?Memory consolidation is fast in the hippocampus via the Entorhinal cortex, but during sleep memory is consolidated in other parts of the cortex
- 24What are the 2 main memory deficits?Amnesia and Alzheimer's Disease
- 25What is Anterograde Amnesia? No new memories formed
- 26What is Retrograde Amnesia? No old memories remembered
- 27What are the effects of Alzheimer's Disease?Memory impairment, later general impairment
- 28What is the largest risk factor for Alzheimer's?Age (the older you get, the most chance you'll have Alzheimer's)
