Materials Development

Flashcards do conjunto (15)
- 1Materials development‘Materials development’ refers to all the processes made use of by practitioners who produce
and/or use materials for language learning, including materials evaluation, their adaptationdesign, production, exploitation and research.
- 2Establishing criteria and developing evaluation instruments for materials evaluationGeneral criteria: Questions
1. Are there any materials for testing?
2. Is it attractive? would ss' enjoy using it?’
3. Does the writer use current everyday language, and sentence structures that follow normal
word order?
4. Are the various stages in a teaching unit adequately developed?
5. Is it foolproof?
- 3Reporting evaluations-Evaluation is inevitably subjective.
-Evaluators tend to develop their own principled criteria.
-Is necessary to take into account the context
- 4Materials adaptation-Bridging
-Making objectives meet requirements
-Matching purpose
-Looking for congruence
-It is necessary to make materials more communicative
- 5Materials production- COURSEBOOK: Writing is creative rather than a mechanical process.
-Inspiration is very important
-There should be a retrieval from the repertoire.
- 6—-It is necessary to take into account the principles of language acquisition.
-There should be a strong relationship between learner and context needs
-There should be a congruence between learners and teacher goals.
- 7Principled development of materialsIMPORTANT QUESTIONs: 1)How do we think people learn a language?
2) How to develop flexible text-driven frameworks; content and language integrated learning?
Important publications: "Meet the realities of publishing materials", "Humanizing a coursebook", Creative approaches for writing materials", "Frameworks for materials development" - 8Materials exploitationIMPORTANT: How teachers use materials depending on their pedagogical goals?
-They use selective materials and use more resourses
-They rely more on textbooks as scripts
(Sometimes teachers ommit some materials because of cultural stereotypes)
- 9Issues in materials deveplment 1. The value of textbooksPROS:
1. Cost-effective.
2. Save time.
3. Useful to base lessons on.
CONS:
1. Don't take into account ss' needs and wants.
2. Ilussion of system and progress.
3. It removes teachers' initiative and power.
- 102. The need for published materialsELT should be learner centered and materials light and the methodology should be centered on communication (conversation-driven) rather than materials driven.
- 113. Pedagogic approachesGood:
Text-driven approach. Materials (texts) provide the activation of learners' brain
Bad:
PPP approach, where students listen and repeat, have a dialogue repetition and to assess they only match and fill the gaps.
- 12Materials acceptabilitySome authors think that some topics as sexism, racism, politics, etc, should be avoided however they stimulate and affective response in learners that facilitate the learning process than neutral books.

- 13Humanizing Materials-It helps ss' to personalice, localise and make meaningful the target language experience.
-It's important to engage the senses, emotions and imagination to develop deep processing from personal involvemente to improve ss' confidence and self-esteem - 14New technologies in language learningComputer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) materials, as online courses and websites, facilitate learning, but it also depends on how the technology is implemented.
Also there are many web sources as google and youtube and ICT as cellphones, which help teachers and students in each process
- 15ConclusionTeachers must pay attention on materials development at the moment of applying and adapting the materials according to the students' needs and context and at the moment of evaluating meterials in terms of their effectiveness in the teaching-learning process.
