- 1What is the mass of the proton?1
- 2What is the mass of the neutron?1
- 3What is the mass of the electron?1/2000
- 4Why are atoms neutral? The positive proton and the negative electron cancel each other out, and the neutral neutrons have no effect on the charge of an atom so the overall charge is neutral
- 5What is an isotope?Different forms of the same element with a different number of neutrons
- 6How do you work out relative atomic mass?relative atomic mass = sum of isotope
abundance x isotope
mass no
_______________________
sum of all abundances
of all isotopes - 7What are compounds?Substances formed from two or more elements
- 8When forming compounds, do metals lose electrons or gain them?Lose them
- 9Do non metals lose or gain electrons while becoming a compound?gain
- 10What is the bonding for two non metals?Covalent
- 11What is the bonding for a metal and a non metal?ionic bonding
- 12True or false- in covalent bonds, opposites attractFalse- opposites attract in ionic
- 13What are compounds held together with?Chemical bonds
- 14Do compounds with covalent bonds have different properties to the original?Yes
- 15True or false- compounds are hard to separateTrue
- 16Why are mixtures easily separated? There's no chemical bond
- 17How can mixtures be separated?Filtration, crystallisation, distillation, fractional distillation and chromatography
- 18What are two examples of mixtures?Air, Crude oil
- 19What is the process for chromatography?1) Draw a pencil baseline near the bottom of a sheet of filter paper
2) Add spots of ink on the baseline and place the beaker of your chosen solvent
3) Make sure the ink isn't touching the solvent so the ink isn't dissolved
4) Place lid on the container to stop the solvent evaporating
5) The solvent will seep up the paper, taking the ink with it
6) Each ink will move up the paper at a different rate so the dyes will separate. If any are insoluble they'll stay on the baseline
7) When the solvent has reached the top, leave the paper to dry
8) The end result is a chromatogram - 20When is filtration used? When your product is an insoluble solid that needs to be separated from a liquid and for purification to remove insoluble impurities
- 21What is the process of evaporation?Pour solution into an evaporating basin, heat solution until the solvent evaporates and crystals start to form. Heat the dish until you are left with dry crystals
- 22What is the procedure for evaporation of rock salt?- Grind the mixture, put in water so the salt dissolves and sand wont, filter the mixture and evaporate the mixture so the salt forms any crystals
- 23What is the process of crystallization?pour solution into evaporating dish and gently heat. Some of the solvent will evaporate. Once the solvent has reached the point of crystallization, remove the dish from heat and leave to cool. The salt should form crystals, filter the crystals out
- 24What is the process of distillation?Heat solution. The part with the lowest boilin
