- 1Atoms contain Protons, Neutrons and electrons: -Nucleus contains protons and neutrons -It also has a positive charge due to protons -Almost the whole mass is concentrated by the nucleusThe Electrons:
-Move around the nucleus in electron shells.
-They are negatively charged.
-They have virtually no mass. - 2Number of Protons is equal to Electrons: -Atoms are neutral, they have no overall charge. - Same number of protons and electrons.Atomic Number and Mass Number:
- Atomic number is how any protons there are.
-Mass number tells you the total number of protons and neutrons in the atom. - 3ELEMENTS - An element is a substance made up of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their nucleus -Atoms can have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons, -Number of protons which decides what type of atom it is.EXAMPLE:
-One Proton in the nucleus would be a hydrogen atom.
-Two Protons would be helium - 4Atoms Can Be Represented By Symbols: -Atoms are shown by one or two letter symbols. -All these symbols are presented on the periodic table.Examples:
C = Carbon
O = Oxygen
Mg = Magnesium - 5ISOTOPES: -Isotopes are different forms of the same element. -Same number of protons just a different number of neutrons. -Same atomic number, different mass numbers.-Many elements can exist as a number of different isotopes.
-Relative atomic mass is used instead of mass number when referring to a element as a whole.
