- 1Communication with hardwaremachine code differrent for each pieces of hardware. Each pc has different cpus etc.
os talks directly to the hardware.Software is written for the OS instead of the hardware. - 2Advantages of OSIf I write a program in C++, I can compile it for Windows, Linux, Mac or Android.
it will run on any machine that can run the operating system, since the it does all the hard work of controlling the hardware - 3Multi TaskingModern processors can execute 4 billion instructions every second. This is more than memory and secondary storage can keep up with. While a processor waits for other components to catch up, it is not doing anything
- 4MultitaskingIn reality the processor runs commands from each task separately, filling in the time when it is waiting for other components.
- 5SecurityIn multi-tasking, multi-user operating systems, process must be kept separate. If a banking application is using some memory locations, another program must not be allowed to access those locations.Memory is divided into pages and the OS keeps track of which page belongs to which process.
- 6securityThe OS can also assign ‘owners’ to files and processes to ensure that if several users are on the same OS, they can only access the data they have permission for.Firewall software can be part a networking OS. This checks the data from the network to attempt to block unwanted traffic.
- 7InterfaceThe OS provides an interface to the user, which software programs can make use of.
There are many different types of interface:
Command Line
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Voice Input - 8Command Linetype commands.
Lightweight and fast but are difficult to understand - 9Managing peripheralsOS' require driver software.
A Device Driver tells a specific OS how to control a specific device
For example a printer driver will take the OS’s “print” command and send the appropriate signal to the printer
