- 1AccumulatorA register used by the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) to store the results of calculations.
- 2APIApplication programming interface - a software library interface used to share data between software and, in particular, web applications.
- 3Arithmetic logic unit (ALU)A component of the CPU that performs arithmetic and logic calculations.
- 4Cache memoryA piece of temporary memory. It can refer to a part of the RAM, storage disk, CPU, or an area for storing web pages.
- 5ClockA component of the CPU that sends out regular pulses. Its job is to synchronize the computer's hardware components.
- 6Clock speedThe speed of a computer's CPU, measured in hertz. This indicates the number of fetch-decode-execute cycles that can run per second.
- 7Control unit (CU)The component of the CPU that manages instructions.
- 8CoreA processing unit within a CPU. CPUs can have multiple cores.
- 9CPU/processorCentral processing unit - the brain of the computer that processes program instructions.
- 10ExecuteCarry out an instruction.
- 11FetchRetrieve data from memory.
- 12Hard disk driveA device used to store large amounts of data.
- 13HertzThe unit of frequency, symbol 'Hz'. 1 Hz is 1 wave or cycle per second.
- 14MemoryThe part of a computer that stores data.
- 15Memory address registerHolds the address of the current instruction that is to be fetched from memory, or the address in memory to which data is to be transferred.
- 16Memory buffer registerHolds the contents found at the address held in the MAR, or data which is to be transferred to main memory. Also referred to as the memory data register (MDR).
