Flashcards
River Dee
Flashcards do conjunto (21)
- 1Where is the source of the River Dee?Snowdonia, National Park.
- 2How high is it above sea level?460m.
- 3What is the average rainfall near the source?3000mm.
- 4What is the geology like? The geology is mainly hard igneous rocks, which are very resistant to erosion.
- 5What is the channel width and depth like? The channel width is narrow and the depth is shallow.
- 6What is the load in the river like?It is full of angular stones.
- 7What direction is the erosion.Vertical.
- 8What does this form?A v-shaped valley.
- 9What processes take place?Sliding and slumping.
- 10What happens to the gradient of the river as the river flows towards the middle course? The gradient decreases.
- 11In what direction does the river now erode?Sideways.
- 12Some deposition now takes place. Give an example of where.Inside bends of meanders.
- 13What happnes to the size and shape of the sediment/load?They get smaller and more rounded.
- 14As more tributaries join the river, what happens to the discharge of the river. The discharge increases.
- 15What has the average rainfall fallen to by the lower course of the river?750mm.
- 16What has happened to the resistance of the rock that the river now flows over? The rocks are softer.
- 17Give an example of the geology type in the lower course.Sedimentary rocks.
- 18What has happened to the width and depth of the channel? The width and depth of the channel both increased.
- 19The velocity has increased. Give a reason why.The velocity increased because the channel is deep and smooth so there is less friction with the river bed and banks.
- 20What evidence is there that there is a large amount of sediment in the river in the lower course? The water in the river is muddy.
- 21What does this large amount of sediment result in?Deposition.
