- 1what is the purpose of the cpuThe Central Processing Unit fetches, decodes and executes instructions.
- 2volatiteVolatile memory requires electricity to store data. When the power is
lost, the memory is wiped. - 3RAMRandom Access Memory stores temporary data from running
applications. - 4ROMRead Only Memory stores the boot up instructions
- 5Virtual memoryVirtual Memory is an extension of RAM set up on the hard drive, used
for when the RAM is full. - 6clock speedThis is how many Fetch, Decode, Execute cycles the processor can
complete per second. - 7CacheA small high speed memory used to store frequently used instructions
from the CPU - 8ALUArithmetic Logic Unit carries out the calculations and logical decisions
within the CPU - 9Control UnitWorks with the CPU to control the flow of data within the systems and
to decode instructions - 10Secondary storageNon-volatile storage used to save files and programs
- 11SoftwareThe general term for computer programs
- 12Flash memoryFlash memory is a special type of RAM that is non-volatile. Flash
memory cannot however replace RAM in a computer as the read/write
speeds are too slow. Flash memory can be used instead of ROM to store
the BIOS. - 13RegisterSmall high-speed memory contained within the CPU. Used by the
processor to store small amounts of data needed during processing - 14ALUThe alu carries out the logical calculations and decisions
named arithmetic logic unit - 15the name of the four registersaccumulator
