Week 18 - PHY: Doppler effect

Stacey R Physics IGCSE Inglês 10 flashcards

Flashcards do conjunto (10)

  1. 1Define the doppler effectA change in the frequency and wavelength of a wave caused by shifts in positions between the source of the wave and the observer
  2. 2Define frequencyRefers to the number of cycles (peaks) that occur per unit of time (seconds)
  3. 3What happens to the pitch when there is a low frequency? The pitch is low as well
  4. 4What happens to the pitch as the frequency increases? The pitch becomes higher
  5. 5Define relative motionThe movement of 1 object/pbserver in relation to another
  6. 6Explain the doppler effect on stationary objectsIn stationary objects, sound waves don't expirience the boppler effect; there is no relative motion between the source and observer, resulting in no frequency shift or change of pitch
  7. 7Explain the doppler effect on moving objects (towards observer)As the sound source moves to the observer the waves begin to compress, due to the object picking up speed. Therefore, a higher pitch can be heard since the waves in the front bunch up creating a higher frequency
  8. 8Explain the doppler effect on moving objects (away from observer)When a sound source moves away from an observer the doppler effects causes the sound waves to stretch out. Resulting in a lower frequency and pitch
  9. 9What is the realtioship between the frequency and wavelengthThey have a inverse relationship. As one increases, the other decreases and vice versa. This is because the wave speed is constant
    (V = f * λ)
  10. 10Give 4applications of the doppler effectIt is used in:
    - Astronomy
    - Radar
    - Medical ultrasound
