- 1"Fair is foul and foul is fair"Witches create the Gothic element - supernatural from the onset of the play. The discrepancy between appearance and reality: how someone appears and how someone really is.
- 2"Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?"Reference to God - 'Neptune' - not even God's omnipotence could wash Macbeth clean of his sins.
Use of hyperbole - "all of great Neptune's ocean" - extreme nature; large amount of water.
Imagery of blood represents Macbeth's guilty conscience/psychological torment - stained from the guilt of murder. - 3"Me thought I heard a voice cry “Sleep no more! Macbeth doth Murder sleep”—the innocent sleep,"Use of repetition emphasises his psychological torture in the after-math of Duncan's murder.
Metaphorically murders his own peace of mind just like he has murdered the king.
Suggests by "Macbeth doth murder sleep" Macbeth's crime is especially heinous because he killed a man while his victim was sound asleep. Since the murdered man was totally defenseless, he will serve as an example to everyone--and especially to Macbeth himself--that sleeping is not safe. It should be a state of peace, comfort and security, but Macbeth's example has made it a state of extreme danger. - 4"A birth born babe's finger"Betrayal of innocence
Killed right after birth and before baptism, thus making the baby damned like the unbaptized Turk, Tartar and Jew. - 5"Look the innocent flower but be the serpent under it"Lady Macbeth's lack of femininity - she takes role of strong and powerful figure in order to make sure herself and her husband get away with the murder of king Duncan.
Once Macbeth turns to a villainous course of action and begins to hide his "serpent" behavior behind a veil of niceness and false innocence, he gets deeper and deeper into the crimes he must commit, including the murder of his friend Banquo.
Can be interpreted Lady Macbeth begins Macbeth's downfall by telling him to "look the..."
Parallel between Macbeth and Lady M and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The mentioning of the serpent in this text is a reminder of who the real villain was in Eden(the devil/serpent). If Macbeth had stopped to consider this parable, he might have realised that he was heading to his own demise. - 6"That I may pour my spirits in thy ear"Manipulate Macbeth
- 7"Is that a dagger which i see before me"The invisible dagger is our first glimpse of Macbeth's powerful imagination - the imagination that is largely responsible for his mental torment throughout.
Macbeth's hallucination is a psychological manifestation of his guilt.
The invisible dagger as a warning sign; Macbeth's conscience attempts to turn Macbeth's attention to what he is about to commit. His guilty conscience attempts to caution him and describe to him what ensues.
The bloody dagger foreshadows the death of Duncan and the beginning of Macbeth's moral demise.
