Geography Unit 2- Resources

Flashcards do conjunto (12)
- 1Consuming Resources Resources are anything that people can use. This can be anything from food to electricity. The North (MEDC's) consumes 15 times as much as the South (LEDC's)
1extra child in its life in an MEDC consumes the same as 30-50 children in an LEDC
MEDC's have 25% of the population and consume 80% of the worlds energy. - 2Thomas Mathus In 1798 Malthus wrote an essay about population, he believed that population grows EXPONENTIALLY 1:2:4:8:16 but food only grows ARITHMETICALLY 1:2:3:4. according to Malthus whenever population outstripped resource supply NATURAL CHECKS would occur

- 3Ester Boserup She believed that as population increases the greater the demand for resources would encourage scientists to develop new solutions to cope. Agriculture intensifications=grow more crops from the same piece of land. eg.GM crops and Improved farming techniques.

- 4Northern Ethiopia 1. 2 babies die every day due to malnutrition and lack of water 2. Crop yields down by 90% because there is not enough water to grow them with will increase their cost. 3. Live stock dieAbu Dhabi
1. Produces 2.7 million barrels a day of oil
2. Has very little rainfall so can't grow many crops
3. So they relies on the money it gets from producing oil to import most of it food. - 5Physical Resources There are renewable sources such as the Sun and water which will never run out, INFINITE. And there is a sustainable resource which is water which meets the needs of people without preventing future generations from their needsEnergy Resource
There only non-renewable resources such as coal, oil and nuclear. We are using up these resources very quickly and these are FINATE supplies so when we run out we have find other methods to produce energy. - 6Minerals- materials that are quarried or mined from the ground. Two of these minerals are Diamonds and Gold, we can use them as jewellery or as building materials, however are non-renewable so will run out.Biological resources-
resources that have developed through growth and development.
A renewable resource is wood as we can let the grow chop them down and plant more trees with their seeds.
A sustainable resource is Fish as we allow them to reproduce and can then get them as a source of food. - 7Black Gold- World oil consumption has risen due to: -increase in world population more cars -more people more manufacturing needed -more people, more food, more farming machinery to cope with demand .Solar Energy
In Germany, China and Italy they are rapidly increasing their renewable solar energy due to rising oil prices and cost of solar panel are decreasing.
Advantages-
-saves fossil fuels, more independent, less CO2 production
Disadvantages
-it costs a lot to build and install, long pay back time, weather dependent - 8Ghana Its demand for energy is increasing because they are one of the fastest growing economies in Africa and the need energy to power their economy. Because Ghana receives a lot of solar radiation as its located in the north of Africa it is reliable and worth using solar energy. They export it to the other countries so it can use that money to help the economy to grow and they will be able to afford more renewable resources

- 9Recycling, conservation & education sustainable =meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. Ecological-footprint = an estimation of the area of the earths land and water that is needed to meet the demand people.Education
Examples- People go into schools to promote recycling. leaflets in public places.
how it helps manage resource consumption- as young people will remember and tell their parents.
lots of people will see the leaflets and be constantly reminded. - 10Conservation Examples- the tax disks on cars and solar panels. how it helps manage resource consumption-The government get money from you driving your car on the roads, so you'll want to pay less so get a more economical car which produces less CO2 and saves the environment. also the government want to save fossil fuels so by paying a bit towards your solar panels it will make people want to get them and will save the fossil fuelsRecycling
Examples- Recycling centres and Re-using clothes
how it helps manage resource consumption- it means that a lot less waste goes to land fill sites and more is re-used so that more doesn't need to be manufactured so less CO2is given off by the factories.
CURITIBA BRAZIL !! GREEN EXCHANGE - 11Biomass biomass is then we burn unused matter from olive oil production to create electricity -2/3 the energy content of coal -sustainableEnergy efficient houses
solar panels, air tight so no heat loss, heat exchanger insulation
reduces the need for central heating and reduce the demand for fossil fuels - 12Car runs on chip fat oil You adapt a diesel engine in a car so that it runs on chip fat oil that you can get for free from restaurants that would normally just throw it away You don't need to use fossil fuels so saves themHydrogen car
It is a car that runs only on hydrogen which there is an almost infinite supply of.
It gives off no greenhouse gasses only water is given off so is sustainable.
