Chapter 8: Motion
Flashcards do conjunto (32)
- 18.1; GRAPHS OF MOTION.
- 2What is the difference between distance and displacement?-Distance = magnitude
-Displacement = How far from starting point in a certain direction - 3What is the difference between speed and velocity?-Speed = magnitude
-Velocity = Speed in a certain direction - 4What is the equation for average velocity v?V = Δs/Δt
s= displacement, t = time - 5What is the gradient on displacement-time graphs?The velocity
- 6What is constant velocity shown by?A straight line
- 7What is shown when the velocity is constantly changing? How do you find the gradient at a point of this curve?A curved line, use a tangent to find gradient.
- 8What 2 things can you do to calculate the displacement on a velocity-time graph?-Assume a mean velocity and use s=vt
-Find area under graph - 9What must be the case for you to use the area under the graph to calculate displacement?The direction must stay the same
- 10What is increasing velocity described as?Acceleration
- 11What is the equation for velocity?a = Δv/Δt
Where v = velocity, t = time - 12Therefore, what is the gradient of a velocity-time graph?Acceleration
- 13What is another name for negative acceleration?Deceleration.
- 148.2; VECTORS.
- 15What are vectors?Quantities that have magnitude and direction, represented by an arrow of appropriate length in the correct direction.
- 16What are quanitites like speed that don't have a direction called?Scalar quantities
- 17What can be done with vectors shown by arrows?They can be added.
- 18What do you need to be clear about when measuring velocity?What it is measured relative to.
- 19How do you find out if 2 aircraft will collide?-Find velocity of other aircraft relative to yours by subtracting velocity of your aircraft relative to ground from that of the other aircraft
-To do this Add your vector in opposite direction to the other aircraft and find the resultant vector (See diagram) - 20Is acceleration a vector?Yes- rate of change of velocity.
- 21What can be done to a vector?Can be resolved into 2 components at right angles to each other.
- 228.3; MODELLING MOTION.
- 23What are some approaches to modelling motion based on?Dividing motion into tiny intervals and describing what happens between one interval and the next.
- 24What does iterative mean?Step-by-step
- 25What is an iteration?A single step
- 26What do iterative models do?Track what is happening as time progresses.
- 27What is the case if friction acts on a falling object?The acceleration decreases.
- 28Why is this an advantage for iterative models?Using algebra and calculus can be difficult to tackle this problem, but an iterative model can be used more easily.
- 29What is a disadvantage of iterative models?In reality, changes happen all the time, not in sudden jumps.
- 30What can an incremental model be based on?Vector addition
- 31When can this be useful?Can be useful when direction of movement changing.
- 32What is a good model for an object falling through the air?The downward acceleration at any time given by:
a = 9.8 - kv^2
Where v = velocity
k = Constant depending on the shape, size and density of the object (needle small k b/c little air resistance, balloon full of air large k)
