Flashcards do conjunto (18)

  1. 1Sampling TheoryFocuses on the generalizability of descriptive findings to the population from which the sample was drawn
  2. 2PopulationThe entire set of individuals you want to study
    EX: UNC Students
  3. 3ElementsThe individual members of the population whose characteristics are to be measured
EX: UNC students who have been sexually assaulted
  4. 4Sampling FrameA list of all elements or other units containing the elements in a population
  5. 5Sampling UnitsUnits listed at each stage of a multistage sampling design
  6. 6Generalizability2 kinds:
Can the findings from a sample of the population be generalized to the population from which the sample was selected?
Can the findings from a study of one population be generalized to another, somewhat different population?
  7. 7Representative SampleA sample that "looks like" the population you're trying to study
  8. 8Probability Sampling MethodsRely on a random, or chance, selection procedure
  9. 9Non probability Sampling MethodsSampling methods without an equal chance of selecting each element
  10. 10Simple Random SamplingRequires some procedure that generates numbers or otherwise identifies cases strictly on the basis of chance
  11. 11Random Digit DialingExactly what it sounds like
  12. 12Systematic Random SamplingA variant of simple random sampling
  13. 13Stratified Random SamplingUses information known about the total population prior to sampling to make the sampling process more efficient. In disproportionate stratified sampling, the proportion of each stratum that is included in the sample is intentionally varied from what it is in the population.
By using proportionate stratified sampling, each stratum would be represented exactly in proportion to its size in the population from which the sample was drawn.
  14. 14Cluster SamplingSampling from a naturally occurring cluster, could be a neighborhood or churches
  15. 15Availability SamplingBased on efficiency and who is already available to you
  16. 16Quota SamplingAvailability sampling but with certain quotas for certain elements
  17. 17Snowball samplingInterviewing one person and they refer you to more people, etc etc
  18. 18Purposive SamplingResearcher chooses specific people
