Flashcards do conjunto (7)

  1. 1What is an equipotential line?A line representing constant head
  2. 2What is a flow line? The flow path of a particle of water
  3. 3What is a flow net?A graphical representation of a flow field compromising of flow lines and equipotentials. CAn be used to calculate seepage flowrates and pore pressure at any point.
  4. 4What is seepage stress? The stress imposed on a soil as water flows through it.
  5. 5What does it mean if the soil skeleton and fluid are both incompressible? That any changes in volume moving through an element of soil must be accompanieed by a chnage in velocity to conserve volume flux.
  6. 6What are the criteria for flownets to satisfy Laplace's equation? The boundary conditions must be satisfied. Flowlines must intersect equipotentials at right angles. The cells between flowlines and equipotentials must be curvilinear squares (The property that an inscribed circle can be drawn to touch each side of the square). The quantity of flow through each flow channel is constant. The head loss between each consecutive equipotential is constant. A flowline can not intersect another flowline. An equipotential can not intersect with another equipotential.
  7. 7What is fluidization and why does it occur?Strong upward seepage of water can cause pore pressures to be greater than gravity stress due to soil weight. This can cause the soil to fluidize leading to instability. Quick sand occurs over a large area. Piping occurs in localised channels. This occurs when the hydraulic gradient is greater than a critical value.
