Processing and analysing data
Flashcards do conjunto (22)
- 1Processing and analysing data1.3
- 2Practical reportsScientists use practical reports to present data they have collected in a way that is logical and can be understood by other scientists. They include a heading, purpose, hypothesis, materials, procedure, results, review and resource list.
- 3HeadingIn your heading, include the name and date(s) of the investigation and a list of partners who were in your team.
- 4PurposeThe purpose (or aim) is where you describe briefly what you were trying to do.
- 5HypothesisAn educated guess about what might happen in an experiment and what might be find out.
- 6MaterialsThis is a list of everything that you used in the investigation.
- 7ProcedureA description of everything you did in the investigation.
- 8ResultsA complete list of your observations and your measurements. The best way to display your measurements is in a graph.
- 9Resource ListThis is where you discuss your experiment usually by answering a set of questions.
- 10ConclusionA brief summary of what you found out in the investigation.
- 11Resource ListList of all resources used in gathering information about the investigation.
- 12Tables of DataQuantitative data is best shown in a table or computer spreadsheet.
- 13UnitsThe measurements in your results tables and spreadsheets are only meaningful if you specify the units they are measured in. Most of your measurements will use metric or SI.
- 14SISystem Internationale
- 15PrefixesLetters or words that sometimes appear before unit symbols and unit names. They allow scientists to measure extremely small and extremely large quantities.
- 16Graphing DataGraphs are better than tables in showing patterns in data.
- 17Bar Graphs and Column GraphsBar and column graphs have a set of continuous numbers along one axis, and discrete (non-continuous) quantities like colours or materials along the other axis.
- 18Pie ChartsPie charts show the proportions or percentages of different discrete quantities. They are sometimes called sector graphs.
- 19Line GraphsLine graphs have a set of continuous numbers along both axes.
- 20Line or curve of best fitA straight line or curve drawn through the 'centre' of points on a graph. These lines or curves of best fit make patterns in your results easier to see. They also allow you to predict any missing measurements.
- 21ExtrapolationThe logical extension of a line graph.
- 22Describing PatternsGraphs that produce straight lines or logical curves indicate that there is a pattern, rule or relationship between the variables that you tested.
