- 1What does a computer system consist of?Hardware and software that work together to process data/ complete tasks.
- 2What is an embedded system? They are computers built into other devices. They are often used as control systems, as they monitor and control machinery in order to achieve a desired result. They are dedicated to a single task.
- 3Computer Components- Power SupplySupplies power to the motherboard, optical and hard drives, and other hardware.
- 4Computer Components- Case Cooling FanExtracts hot air from the computer case.
- 5Computer Components- MotherboardThe main circuit board in the computer, where the hardware is connected.
- 6Computer Components- CPU Heat Sink and Cooling FanKeeps CPU at a steady temperature.
- 7Computer Components- CPUThe CPU is the central processing unit. It is the brain of the computer system.
- 8What does the processing power of a CPU depend on?Clock speed, Number of cores, Cache size.
- 9The Control Unit/ CUThe CU is the overall control of the CPU. Its main job is to execute program instructions, through the fetch-decode-execute cycle.
- 10The Arithmetic Logic Unit/ ALUThe ALU does almost all of the calculations. It does simple addition and subtraction, compares the size of numbers and can do multiplications and divisions, through repeated additions and subtractions. It also performs logic operations (AND, OR, NOT) and binary shifts.
- 11CacheThe cache is very fast memory in the CPU, but is slower than registers. It stores regularly used data so it can be accessed quickly. When data is requested, the CPU is checked first. Then it will check the RAM.
- 12What are disadvantages of the cache?Caches have very low capacity and are much more expensive than RAM and secondary storage.
- 13FETCH (Fetch Decode Execute)The memory address is copied from the program counter to the MAR. The instruction is copied from the MAR to the MDR.
- 14DECODE (Fetch Decode Execute)The instruction in the MDR is decoded by the CU.
- 15EXECUTE (Fetch Decode Execute)The instruction is performed.
