What is usually the first diagnostic test done? Observing symptoms.
When investigating the cause, what type of sample do they take? A small amount of tissue or fluid.
What does counting cells mean? They count either pathogen cells or white blood cells responding to the pathogen (in blood)
What is gram staining? They stain bacteria w/ a dye to distinguish between those that are gram positive & negative.
Why do scientists grow pathogens in a cell culture. They grow them in controlled condition in a lab so there is enough to provide samples for diagnostic tests.
What is an example of a growth medium? Agar jelly.
How does isolation & re-infection prove the cause of a disease? By isolating a particular pathogen & growing it we can re infect a healthy plant. If the same symptoms occur, we can be confident the pathogen caused the disease.
What is a gene probe? A short section of single-standard DNA called.
