- 1Why the two-party system has prevailed1: The electoral system put in place is a winner take all system that only allows one winner regardless of how much they won by to receive 100% of the representation from that district suppressing the minority that did not win the vote.

Campaign financing and third parties inability to compete in raising enough money against the major parties. - 2Why the 2 party system it hasn’t prevailed:In addition to this the last third party to actually rise out of the shadow of the two party system is the republican party in the 1860 presidential election. There hasn’t been a real successful third party that has changed the face of our two party system since that elections but there have been parties that have affected the electoral process and depending on your affiliation have either negatively or positively affected the outcome of major elections, i.e. the Bull Moose party in presidential election of 1912, Ralph Nader and the Green party in presidential election of 2000.

Party success during a particular time period; most competitive at presidential level
3 indicators (Ranney index): 1) the percentage of popular vote for the parties’ gubernatorial candidates 2) the percentage of seats held by parties in each house of the legislature 3) the length of time plus the percentage of time that parties held both governorship and a majority in the state legislature
Political competition is vital in a democracy because when an officeholder expects to win reelection easily, he or she has less incentive to pay attention to voters’ needs
The disappearance of these districts has eliminated most of the moderate congress members who used to be elected in them (southern Blue Dog Democrats and moderate northeastern Republicans) → congress has become increasingly polarized - 4Factors that constrain a state from being competitive:
