Questão Responda
7 Sterilization methods 1. Autoclave 2. Radiation 3. Dry Heat 4. Boiling 5. Flashing 6. Gas 7.Cold disinfectant
Autoclaving: 3 modes of action Heat, steam, pressure
What is the purpose of heat in the autoclave? To denature microbial proteins
What is the purpose of steam in the autoclave? Supplies the heat, promotes penetration of the heat
What is the purpose of pressure in the autoclave? Adequately heats the steam
3 factors affecting autoclaving Temperature, Pressure, Exposure time
Minimums for Autoclaving (Temp, PSI, time) 275° F - 15 PSI - 10 min 250° F - 15 PSI - 15 min
Advantages/Disadvantages: Autoclave Adv: Economical, consistent, safe DIsadv: Dulls sharp instruments, need pressurized equipment, scorches fabric if too dry, damage instruments if not dried properly
Flashing: 1. Typically used for? 2. Temp - PSI - Time 1. Individual instruments (may have been dropped during surgery) 2. 275° F - 32 psi - 4 minutes
How does boiling water sterilize? Denaturing microbial proteins
Boiling Water: Time for partly sterilized Time for fully sterilized Partly - 20 min Fully - 3+ hrs
Boiling Water: Advantages, disadvantages Adv: Good for field work Disadv: Rarely used, autoclave is better
Dry heat: Mode of action Uses Mode of action: oxidation denatures proteins Uses: Powders and non-aqueous solutions, animal care facilities
Dry heat: Advantages, disadvantages Adv: Will not dull cutting edges Disadv: Hot air oven needed
Gas sterilization: What gas is used? Mode of action? Gas: Ethylene Oxide Mode of action: Destroys metabolic pathways in pathogens
Gas sterilization: Advantages, disadvantages Adv: Good for heat-sensitive materials, electrical & optical equipment, will not dull instruments Disadv: Expensive, flammable, dangerous, carcinogenic, OSHA regulations
Radiation: Mode of action Uses Mode of action: damages cell enzymes and DNA Uses: Commercial preparation of pharmaceuticals, biologic products & disposable plastics
Cold "Sterilization": Mode of action Advantages, disadvantages Mode of action: destroys metabolic pathways in microorganisms Advantages: Will not dull instruments, good for field instruments, not inactivated by organic material Disadvantages: Must be at correct concentrations, rusts, cause tissue damage
