Flashcards
Basic atoms (structure and charge)

Flashcards do conjunto (6)
- 1Electron arragngementElectrons are found around the nucleus of a atom. They are arranged according to shells.

- 2What are shells?Shells are the invisible rings that allow the electron to orbit around the nucleus. An element can have as many shells as it needs to. The first shell always has a maximum of 2 electrons, the other shells can have a maximum of 8 electrons.
- 3The arrangement of the electronsThe amount of electrons found within an element are the same as the number of protons found within the nucleus. On a periodic table this is known as an "atomic number" (number of protons). When electrons are arranged, they tend to be in pairs and opposite one another.

- 4Distance from the nucleus....The further away an electron is from it's nucleus, the weaker the force of attraction. This make an element more reactive and less stable. This is because it requires less energy to remove the electron on the outermost shell (the shell furthest from the nucleus) then it is to remove an electron on the first shell.
- 5Atoms and chargesAn atom has three subatomic particles: A neutron (no charge but a mass of 1), protons (a positive charge and a mas of 1)
(The above neutrons and protons are found in the nucleus)
and an electron (a negative charge and a mass of 1/2000) (the electron orbits the nucleus)
- 6Ions An ion is a charged atom which is either positive or negative. The charge depends on the amount of electrons lost or gained. If the element is a metal, it will lose its electon/s and become positively charged (there are now more protons than electrons) and if the element is a non-metal it will gain electron/s and so the overall charge is negative (there are now more electrons than protons).
