  1. 1Explain why you can hear better in an auditorium that has grooves in the walls than one with flat walls. When the walls of a room or auditorium are too reflective, the sound becomes garbled due to reverberations. If the surface is more absorbent, the sound level will be too low. A balance between reverberation and absorption is desired.
  2. 2What is refraction? Why does it occur? Give examples of sound refraction and light refraction.Refraction is the change in direction of propagation of any wave. It occurs as a result of its traveling at different speeds at different points along the wave front. An example of sound refraction is sound waves bending away from warm ground. An example of light refraction is a swimming pool appearing shallower than its true depth.
  3. 3What is a mirage? When are mirages formed? Give an example of a mirage you've seen.A mirage is the gradual upward bending of rays of light. Mirages are formed when the part of the wave nearest the ground is sped up. An example of a mirage is a motorist driving on a hot road that appears to be wet ahead.
  4. 4Why does the sun stay in the sky a little longer than expected at sunset? What shape is the sun then? Why? What would you expect to happen at sunrise? The sun staying in the sky a little longer than expected at sunset is an illusion caused by light refracted by Earth's atmosphere. Though the sun is round, it appears not to be because of this refracted light. I expect the same thing to happen at sunrise.
  5. 5What is a rainbow? How is it formed? Be specific.A rainbow is an arch of colors formed in the sky. It is formed by the refraction and dispersion of the sun's light by rain or other water droplets in the atmosphere.
  6. 6What is total internal reflection? When does it happen? Why do diamonds sparkle so much?Total internal reflection occurs when a propagating wave strikes a medium boundary at an angle larger than a particular critical angle with the respect to the normal to the surface. Diamonds sparkle so much because they have the smallest critical angle of any known substance.
