  1. 11. SievingSieving is a simple technique for separating particles of different sizes. A sieve such as used for sifting flour has very small holes. Coarse particles are separated or broken up by grinding against one another and the screen openings. Depending upon the types of particles to be separated, sieves with different types of holes are used. Sieves are also used to separate stones from sand.1. Sieving
  2. 22. EvaporationEvaporation is a technique used to separate out homogeneous mixtures where there is one or more dissolved salts. The method drives off the liquid components from the solid components. The process typically involves heating the mixture until no more liquid remains. Prior to using this method, the mixture should only contain one liquid component, unless it is not important to isolate the liquid components. This is because all liquid components will evaporate over time. This method is suitable to separate a soluble solid from a liquid.2. Evaporation
  3. 33. DistillationDistillation is an effective method to separate mixtures comprised of two or more pure liquids. Distillation is a purification process where the components of a liquid mixture are vaporized and then condensed and isolated. In simple distillation, a mixture is heated and the most volatile component vaporizes at the lowest temperature. The vapor passes through a cooled tube (a condenser), where it condenses back into its liquid state. The condensate that is collected is called distillate.3. Distillation
  4. 44. DecantationDecantation is the process of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or liquid below. The process can be carried out by tilting the mixture after pouring out the top layer. This process can also be used to separate two liquids that do not mix with each other.4. Decantation
  5. 55. CrystallizationCrystallization is a technique used for the purification of substances. A separation technique to separate solids from a solution. The atoms/molecules of a substance arrange themselves in a well-defined three-dimensional lattice and, consequently, minimize the overall energy of the system. When a substance is subjected to crystallization, its atoms or molecules bind together through well-defined angles.5. Crystallization
  6. 66. FiltrationFiltration is a separation method used to separate out pure substances in mixtures comprised of particles, some of which are large enough in size to be captured with a porous material. Particle size can vary considerably, given the type of mixture.6. Filtration
  7. 77. MagnetismMagnetic separation is the process of separating components of mixtures by using magnets to attract magnetic materials. The process that is used for magnetic separation detaches non-magnetic material with those who are magnetic. During magnetic separation, magnets are situated inside two separator drums which bear liquids. Due to the magnets, magnetic particles are being drifted by the movement of the drums.7. Magnetism
  8. 88. Paper ChromatographyPaper chromatography is a technique used for separating dissolved chemical substances by taking advantage of their different rates of migration across sheets of paper. It is used to separate colored chemicals or substances.8. Paper Chromatography
  9. 99. CentrifugingCentrifugation is a technique used for the separation of particles from a solution according to their size, shape, density, viscosity of the medium and rotor speed.
The particles are suspended in a liquid medium and placed in a centrifuge tube. The tube is then placed in a rotor and spun at a define speed.
