Soil Pressures
Flashcards do conjunto (4)
- 1What are overburden pressure profilesAn Overburden Pressure profile is a graphical representation of the variation of the
pressure on the soil due to overlying material with depth. - 2Pressure at depth due to a surface loadThese tend to decrease with depth below surface as opposed to overburden pressures which increase with increasing depth.
To calculate the pressures at a particular depth due to a surface loading we use a design chart
This particular chart is divided into two halves- the left hand side represents the pattern of stress that occurs under a circular foundation , whilst the righthand side represents the stress distribution under a strip foundation.
To use the chart first decide which type of loading you are dealing with and hence which half of the chart to use. - 3Rankine's Method (1857)Rankine's method considers thestresses on an element of soil behind a smooth vertical
retaining wall - 4What are the limitations to the Rankins theory?1.Applies only to vertical backed walls.
2.Does not allow for friction between wall back and soil. As wall yields friction forces have a reducing effect on earth pressure.
