Flashcards do conjunto (36)

  1. 1what is a wavea disturbance moving through a medium that transfers energy without transferring matter
  2. 2what is a transverse wavea wave that has an oscillation that is perpendicular (90 degrees) to the direction of travel
  3. 3what is a longitudinal wavea wave that has an oscillation that is parallel to the direction of travel
  4. 4label a wavelabel a wave
  5. 5what are the definitions of: amplitude wavelength frequencyamplitude: the distance from the rest to the peak or trough
wavelength: the distance from one wave to the same point on the next wave
frequency: how many waver in a second
  6. 6what is a wave fronta diagram that only shows the peak of the wave through a series of parallel lines
  7. 7what are the layers from earth, outer to innerouter crust
    inner crust
    mantel
    outer core
    inner core
  8. 8how do we know what the layer of the planet are and what are the different types which cause thisearth quakes
cause by primary (P) waves and secondary (S) waves
  9. 9what is the key information about primary waves- they are longitude so they cause the ground to move up and down
-they pass through solids and liquids
-they go faster through the more dense materials
    - can be felt everywhere, even if it is only tiny
  10. 10what is the key information about secondary waver- they are transverse waves so they can cause the ground to move from right to left
    -they ONLY pass through solids
-they are slower the p waves
-they go faster through more dense material
  11. 11describe the core practical to find out the speed of a wave in a solidmeasure - with a ruler - the bar, the double it to get the wave length
hang the bar from 2 elastic bands on clamps to allow for the bar to vibrate
tap the bar lightly with a metal rod and measure it on the ipad to get the frequency
then multiply the wavelength by the frequency to get the speed
repeat 3 more times to find average
  12. 12describe the practical to find out the speed of a wave in a liquidset the light to flash as the same frequency as the waves being produced, then you know the frequency
measure the wave length of 1 wave with a ruler and times them together
  13. 13how do sound waves workthey are longtiudinal waves, the sound moves because the particles collide into each other. the volume of sound increase as the amplitude increase. the higher the frequency the higher the pith. sound waves go from compressed to rarefactions and collide with ear drums to hear it
  14. 14label the parts of the earlabel the parts of the ear
  15. 15what does these parts of the ear do: outer ear ear drum Ossicles cochlea hairs inside cochlea auditory nerveouter ear- channels sound into head, passes to ear drum through ear channel
ear drum- thin membrane that vibrates when sound hits it, these are passes to ear bones
Ossicles - contains 3 bones - hammer, anvil, stirrup - amplify the vibrations that pass to the cochlea
cochlea - contains a membrane that is thicker at one end then the other, the thicker end detects high frequency the thinner end detects lower frequencies
the hairs - they move and detect sound to send them to the auditory nerve
auditory nerve - made up of neurons and turns the sound waves into nerve impulses, that are passed to the brain
  16. 16what is ultrasoundany sound that has a frequency beyond 20000Hz
  17. 17how does a sonar system use ultrasounda sonar sends a sound wave from the boat and it goes to the sea bed and bounces back to the boat, you can work out the distance from the boat to the sea bed by working out the speed of the sound wave and how long it takes to get back to the boat. However you must divide by 2 after doing speed x times as the sound wave has travelled there and back
  18. 18how does an ultrasound, when looking at a baby, use ultrasound wavesgel is put onto the belly, the probe sends ultrasound waves into the belly. The gel is used to allow an easy access for the waves to pass through the skin. At every change in skin/ surface the wave will bounce back to the probe. These are then transmitted to a computer where they make an image. At the top of the image it's the closest to the probe so the further down the image is the less accurate it is. The machine measures time and calculates the distance.
  19. 19what is Infrasoundany sound that is bellow 20Hz
  20. 20how does a bat use infrasoundbats send out an infrasound wave. It travels to say a moth and reflects back to the bat. The bat can tell the time it took he then multiplies that by his speed and divided by 2. that is the distance between the bat and the moth so he knows how far away it is.
  21. 21what are the properties of light- it can travel through empty space
-electromagnetic waves have a wavelength frequency and amplitude
-transfers energy from source to receiver
-travels at a constant speed in vacuum 10^8
  22. 22what does it mean by emissionan original source of electromagnetic waves
  23. 23what does it mean by Absorptionhow matter 'takes up' or 'captures' the energy transferred by electromagnetic waves through a medium
  24. 24what does it mean by Transmissionthe propagation (movement) of electromagnetic waves through a medium
  25. 25what is specular reflectiona type of surface reflectance often described as a mirror-like reflection of light from the surface. the incident light is reflected into a single outgoing direction.
  26. 26what is diffuse reflectionlight is reflected at many different angles and there is no clear image
  27. 27what is refractionthe bending of light when it is transmitted through different medians and as a result the speed changes causing light to bend
  28. 28what is the rule for angles in refractionthe angle of incident from air to water is the same as the angle of refraction from glass to air
  29. 29how to investigate the angle of refraction and incidence-to find the relationship between the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction when light enters the block from air and vis versa
-shine a ray of light onto a glass block
-measure the angle of incidence and refraction on opposite sides of the normal line for both air to glass and glass to air boundaries
-repeat experiment by changing the size of the angle of incidence
  30. 30how to investigate the angle of reflection and the angle of incidnece-put a mirror on paper and draw where it is
-draw a line connected to it which is perpendicular to the mirror
-set up the light ray box with a single slit
-use the light ray box and point it at mirror
-put crosses where the light is and join it all up
-measure using a protractor the angle form the perpendicular line to the light and do the same for the reflected line
-the first angle is the angle of incidence the second it the angle of reflection
  31. 31what happens to the light ray when it travels through different mediums and how does this effect the position of the light to the normal linewhen the ray goes through a more dense material it bend toward the normal as it slows down so i>r
when the light ray goes through a less dense material it bends away from the normal as it speeds up so i
  32. 32what is total internal reflectioncomplete reflection of a ray of light within a medium such as water or glass from the surrounding surfaces back into the medium.
  33. 33when is a converging lens more powerful, what dose sit look like and where is the focal lengththe more powerful the lens the smaller the focal length, therefor more powerful, which can be found after the light has hit the lens. it is where all the lines cross
  34. 34what does a converging lens do to lightit bends the light so that it all comes together after the lens
  35. 35when is a diverging lens more powerful, what doe it look like and where is the focal lengththe thicker the lens the smaller the focal length, therefore more powerful, which can be found before light has hit the lens. it is where all the lines cross
  36. 36what does a diverging lens do to lightit bends the light so that they separate
