Flashcards do conjunto (22)
- 1Electromagnetic waves don't transfer any matter. What do they transfer?Energy
- 2Diagram of the EM

- 3How is the frequency of EM radiation related to the energy carried by it's photons? The frequency and photon energy increases as you go along the electromagnetic spectrum
- 4What does the intensity of a beam of EM radiation mean? The intensity of radiation means how much energy arrives at each square metre of surface per second
- 5What is Ionisation? When a photon hits an atom or molecule it has something has enough energy to remove an electron and change the atom or molecule
- 6Name 3 types of ionising radiationUltraviolet
X-rays
Gamma Rays - 7Why is ionisation dangerous if it occurs in your cells? If your cells are exposed the damage to DNA molecules could cause mutations and can cause cancer
Very high doses can kill your cells all together - 8How do radiographers protect themselves from X-rays?May put lead shields over part of your body that aren't being investigated
Radiographers wear lead aprons or stand behind concrete to protect themselves - 9What sort of radiation is used in conventional cookers?Microwaves
- 10Briefly explain how microwaves cook foodMake particles vibrate, heating them up
- 11Name 3 greenhouse gasesCarbon dioxide
Methane
Water vapour - 12How is ozone made in the atmosphere?UV radiation splits a normal oxygen (O2) atom into 2 oxygen atoms
One of these oxygen atoms combines with another oxygen molecule to form the ozone molecule (O3) - 13How is carbon dioxide returned to the atmosphere in the carbon cycle?Respiration
-plants
-animals
-decomposers
Burning - 14What has been happening to levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the last 150 years? It has been increasing because it is being released into the air quicker than it's being removed
- 15What 2 effects does chopping down and burning trees have on the atmospheric carbon dioxide level?Adds CO2 into the atmosphere as trees are the main thing that removes it from the air and burning also adds a lot of CO2
- 16What is global warming?A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere
- 17What's causing global warming? How do we know this?Rise of Co2 by increasing green house effect
There is a link between the concentration of Co2 and global temperature - 18Give 2 possible consequences of global warmingSea gets warmer causing it to expand which leads to sea levels rising - floods
Also affect food production - some regions are too dry to grow food - 19Why are radio waves good at transmitting information over long distances? They don't get absorbed by the Earths atmosphere as much as the other waves in the EM spectrum with higher frequencies
- 20Describe 2 uses of microwavesSatellite communication
Mobile phone communication - 21Diagrams illustrating analogue and digital signals

- 22What advantages do digital signals have over analogue signals?A digital receiver will decode these pulses to get the original sound whilst analogue weaken as they travel
