Flashcards
Pressure

Flashcards do conjunto (16)
- 1What is pressure?Pressure tells us how concentrated a force is on an area
- 2What is the formula for Pressure and whats it's unit?Pressure = Force/Area
unit - Pascal (Pa) - 3What is Fluid Pressure? This is the pressure of at a point within a fluid arising due to the weight of the fluid
- 4Give an Example of Fluid PressureAtmospheric Pressure
- 5Why is it more difficult to breath at higher altitudes? At higher altitudes there is less weight of air pushing down about you reducing the atmospheric pressure
- 6What formula would you use to calculate fluid pressure?

- 7What fluids the equation to calculate fluid pressure only apply to?It only applies to Incompressible fluids, as we have assumed that density does not change with depth
- 8What does pressure increase with?Pressure increases with depth
- 9in which direction does pressure act?Pressure acts in all directions.
- 10Using an example to explain what Upthrust is.When you try to push an inflated ball under water and it's pushed back up, this force is called upthrust.
- 11What causes upthrust? As we know Pressure increases with depth and so, as an object is pushed under water it will experience greater pressure at it's base than it will at it's top and the upthrust is the resultant upward force.
- 12State Archimede's principle? When an object is completely or partly immersed in a fluid, it experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.
- 13What does upthrust depend on? (2 things)1. The volume of the object submerged
2. Density of the fluid - 14What must an object do in order to float? An object must displace it's own weight of the surrounding fluid to float.
- 15If an object floats then the upthrust is equal to?upthrust = weight
- 16If an object sinks then the upthrust is equal to?upthrust < weight
