Flashcards
Weathering

Flashcards do conjunto (12)
- 1What Are Bedding Planes?A line of rock separating two different layers, it depicts the layer of sediment that was originally deposited horizontally millions of years ago.

- 2What Are Faults?A large crack in a rock caused by the earths movement.
- 3When Can You Tell Something Is Saturated? When all pore space in soil or rock are full of water making the soil/rock very heavy or unstable.
- 4What Is A Percolate? It is when water moves from the soil to the groundwater.

- 5What Is The Water Doing When Infiltrating? It is moving from the surface to the soil.
- 6What Is WeatheringWeathering is the breaking down of rocks in situ.
- 7What Is Chemical Weathering?Where the internal structure of the rock or mineral is changed or destroyed by a chemical reaction.
- 8What Is Carbonation? When acid rain reacts with lime stone to dissolve it.
- 9What Is Oxidation? When Oxygen And Water React.
- 10What Is Hydrolysis? When acid rain causes rocks to rot.
- 11What Is Mechanical Weathering?Where something physically break down the rock into smaller pieces, without changing its properties.
- 12What Is Freeze-Thaw1. Water collects in a rocks cracks.
2. Water freezes and then expands forcing the cracks in the rock to expand.
3. Ice Thaws contract allowing more water in the cracks and also allows the water to go in deeper.
4. Process repeats.
