| Juxtaposition | Two clauses (parts of sentences) of the opposite meaning put in a sentence to emphasise the difference e.g. Bernard uses black rocks on the white sand in order to build his sign - S.O.S |
| Pathetic fallacy | When the weather reflects a characters mood. |
| Sibilance | Repetition of the 'S' sound in a sentence. |
| Neologism | Made up words for effect. |
| Oxymoron | Two words directly next to each other in a sentence that are opposite in meaning e.g. black and white. |
| Rhetorical question | Question that requires no answer. |
| Jargon | Words that are associated with a certain identity group, such as a particular trade or profession. |
| Analogy | Comparison between two things e.g. the analogy between the heart and a pump. |
