- 1What does a File Server do?The file server hold all of the computers information and files that are saved onto it.
- 2What does the Proxy Server do?The proxy server takes your request for the URL into account and decides whether to block it or allow it. A list of websites is created that are to be blocked and the proxy server ensures that they cannot be accessed on the computers on that server.
- 3What does the Domain Name Server do?The domain name server finds the website you are looking for by simply using it's name to find the IP address. Humans are not good at remembering individual long sets of numbers, so the domain name server find the website for us by using its name. An example would be 'www.bbc.co.uk'
- 4What does the Web Server do?A web server stores websites ready to serve them to those who are looking for it, all they have to do is type in the web address for it to be served to them.
- 5Mail ServerThe mail server hold all of the users emails for them. When the user wants to view their emails, all they have to do is go to the mail server either through a browser (such as Google), or it is downloaded to the user.
- 6RouterThese route packets of data along cables in a network. It send it directly to where it needs to go through the quickest route possible judging by the header of the packet.
- 7Point of PresenceAll Internet Service Providers have points of presence of the internet. These are buildings that contain all the necessary equipment required when handling data requests.
- 8Network Access PointThe job of the Network Access Point is to allow Internet Service Providers to interconnect their networks in order to allow data to pass over the networks. Like the PoP it is a building that houses all the essential equipment to allow this.
