  1. 1What features must an OS have?Resource Management
    (Processor, File, I/O)
    User Interface
    Data Security
    Utility Software
  2. 2What are Utility Programs?Utility Programs are software, which are used to maintain, configure, and optimize the performance of a computer.
  3. 3What does a Disk Formatter do?Prepares a disk for initial use, "formats" the disk, by splitting up the disk into small sections for easier data handling.
  4. 4What is Fragmentation? When data is written in non-contiguous sections, so it is essentially 'scattered' across the hard disk, slowing the rate of data retrieval.
  5. 5What is Defragmentation? The process of reorganizing 'fragmented' data, back into contiguous sectors, increasing the rate of data retrieval.
  6. 6What are the responsibilities of Disk Check/repair software?Checks the disk for errors and fixes them, and attempts to recover data from corrupted sections of the hard disk.
  7. 7What is Back-Up utility software? This software creates a backed up copy of all the data on a hard disk, which is usually compressed to save space. Can be copied to a new hard disk, if the old one is damaged or needs to be replaced.
  8. 8What are Library Programs?Collections of resources, functions, and sub-routines, which can be referenced when writing a complex program (or any program).
  9. 9Why are Libraries useful for programmers? They can reference the resources located in a library, which can be created by an individual and shared across the internet. This saves time and space, so programmers don't need to rewrite functions over and over again, risking errors.
  10. 10Why would a programmer use a Compiler over a Interpreter?Produces a executable file, which can be run without the source code, increasing data security. Additionally, produces faster code, so the program will run faster.
  11. 11Why would a programmer use an Interpreter, instead of a Compiler? Can be used on multiple platforms, easy to test, as it can be run directly from the source code, through the use of a 'run-time environment'
  12. 12What is an Assembler? An Assembler translates Assembly Language to Machine code. This is quick because Assembly language has a 1:1 relationship with machine code.
  13. 13How does an Interpreter work?An Interpreter partially compiles high-level programming languages, by reading the source code one line at a time, and executing them in order. A virtual machine is often used to run the software, allowing it to be used in different platforms.
  14. 14Name 2 examples of UICommand Line Interface
    Graphical User Interface
    Form Interface
    Menu Driven Interface
