Sensorimotor learning process
Flashcards do conjunto (15)
- 1Define sensorimotor learningA process by which an organism benefits from experience so future behaviour is better applied to the specific environment.
- 2The goal of training/coaching is not to make you perform better in _____ but in ______.Training, competition
- 3Give the two types of memory involved with sensorimotor learning and summarise what they are.Declarative memory: conscious recollection of experience and facts e.g. paul Lambert is the manager of Aston Villa. (AKA explicit memory)
Procedural memory: something we can verbally describe, and it is not conscious. The existence of this memory is shown through performance. (AKA implicit memory) - 4Describe the process for forming declarative memoriesFirst stage involves encoding, moving information from short term memory into permanent storage. Retrieval is then getting info from storage so it can be used.
- 5As a result of good sensorimotor learning we are able to do tasks ....quickly and accurately without consciously thinking about them
- 6Give the first stage in the sensorimotor learning process and give charactersistcsStage 1: Cognitive stage, performer has to think about and monitor every stage of the movement. This means it isn't smooth and easy to mix up the order of events and make mistakes. They are highly susceptible to distractions and prone to error.
- 7Give the second stage of sensorimotor learning, explaining what it involvesAssociative stage: performers are able to chunk the steps into a few steps. E.g while before they had 5 steps involving getting ready to hit the ball now they store this under address the ball. Reducing the amount of steps they go through before hitting the ball making it a smoother action. also able to store more stimulus response
- 8Give the final step in the sensorimotor learning process, describing characteristicsStage 3, Autonomous stage. This involves automatic processing, once the skill is started it runs unconsciously meaning it is very smooth and resistant to errors and distraction. The movement is generally faster than previous stages
- 9Explain what expert induced amnesia is, and which stage of learning it is linked with? When the performer reaches the autonomous stage and the actions are now unconscious, it means when they come to tell someone how they do something they struggle to do so.
- 10Define automaticityWhen skills can be performed with little or no attentional resources allowing other tasks to be complete at the same time. Associated with expert performance
- 11What is the link between our rate of learning and the stage we are in. What is this theory called?early stages, stage 1, we learn quickly making rapid developments however when we reach stage 3 we learn much slower with adjustments taking a long time. Called The Power Law of Practice
- 12Describe how participants H.M has allowed us to study memory, and the things they found as a result of his study.H.M had part of his brain removed due to severe epilepsy, meaning he can't form memories termed anterograde amnesia (however his memories from his childhood are perfectly intact). He was asked to undertake a drawing task while looking in a mirror and his performance was observed over 10 trials on consecutive 3 days. They found that despite not remembering he did the task he still showed improvement. Implications of this: Declarative memories are formed and stored in different brain area than procedural memories.
- 13declarative memories are stored in the _____, _______ Procedural memories are stored in the ______, _______declarative memories are stored in the Frontal cortex, Hippocampus
Procedural memories are stored in the Motor Cortex, Cerebellum - 14If we don't need to form long term declarative memories what implication does this have?We might be able to just go straight to implicit learning. The learning by doing approach.
- 15List some things in addition to practice time which affect our sensorimotor learning.Consolidation during rest. Schedule of practice. Feedback. Transfer of skills etc
