Aggression notes

Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1What are the 3 theories of aggression?1. Frustration aggression hypothesis
2. Excitation transfer model (Zilmann 1979)
3. Social Learning Theory (Bandura) - 2What is the frustration - aggression hypothesis?Frustration always leads to aggression and all aggression comes from frustration. Model has been applied to the effects of job loss on violence (Catalano, Navaco & McConnell, 1997) and the role of social and economic deprivation in 'ethnic cleansing' of the non-serbs in Bosnia (Staub, 2000). Terrorism may be spawned from chronic and acute frustration over the ineffectiveness of other mechanisms to acheive socioeconomic and cultural goals.
- 3What is a weakness of the frustration aggression hypothesis? The theories loose definition of frustration and the difficulty in predicting which kinds of frustrating circumstances may lead to aggression
- 4What is the excitation transfer model?Zilmann 1979
The expression of aggression is a function of learnt behaviour, some excitation from other source, and the persons interpretation of the arousal state, such that an aggressive response seems appropriate. According to Zilmann, any experience that markedly increases the level of overall excitation can lead to unintended circumstances. - 5Outline research support from the excitation transfer model..Kerr (2005)
Found this may explain why aggressive behaviour occurs at football matches, the extreme levels of excitation that occur transfer onto the rival fans
- 6Outline the social learning theory...Human social behaviour is not innate but learnt from appropriate models. Through socialisation, children learn to aggress through learning by direct experience, and learning by vicarious experience.
Bandura (1963) - Bobo doll - modelling - 7According to Bandura, what are the determining factors in whether a person is aggressive in a particular situation...1. A persons previous experience of others' aggressive behaviour
2. How successful aggressive behaviour has been in the past
3. The current likelihood that an aggressive response will be rewarded or punished
4. The complex array of cog, social , and environmental factors in situation - 8List all the personal and situational variations that contribute to aggressive behaviourIndividual difference, Type A personality, Catharsis, Alcohol, Dis-inhibition, Deindividualisation, Dehumanisation (baiting crowd)
Situational variables - Physical environment, heat, crowding - 9What is the catharsis hypothesis? An instrumental reason for aggression is catharsis which refers to the process of using our behaviour as an outlet for the release of pent up emotion
- 10Outline research which undermines the Cathartic hypothesis ...Bushman, Baumeister & Stack 1999
Students presented with 3 fake newspaper articles and asked to write an essay
